Understanding security in Oracle Instant Portal

In Oracle Instant Portal, security is effected by the relationship between pages and users. A user can access a page at three privilege levels: View, Contribute, Manage. Oracle Portal Administrators have Manage privileges on all pages in the portal.

There are two ways to control which of these levels users have for a given page:

By user. The Manage User Rights dialog, accessed by clicking in the edit toolbar, displays a list of all registered users on the left :

When you highlight a user, all the top-level pages in the portal are displayed on the right, along with check boxes to indicate the user's privilege level: View, Contribute, or Manage. Use the check boxes to grant or revoke privileges for each page as appropriate.
By page. When you click the tab of a top-level page while in edit mode, you get something that looks like this:

By clicking on the far left icon, you display a list of all users and their privilege level for that particular page:

Use the check boxes to control each user's access level to this page.

Notes

The privilege level a user has for a top-level page cascades all the way down to that page's child pages. You cannot control privileges for a child page irrespective of its top-level page. Thus, only top-level pages are listed in the User Management dialog, and the Manage Page Privileges dialog is available for top-level pages only.
